When we were kids, a sandbox was all we needed to dream big. One minute it was a construction site, the next a dinosaur world, and by the end of the day, somehow, it had become a beach vacation. Those little worlds sparked creativity, adventure, and endless imagination. But as parents, we noticed something missing: the sandboxes we loved growing up had practically disappeared. We wanted our own kids and a new generation of little explorers to experience that same simple, hands-on magic.
So we created Urban Dunes, a bright, joyful, imagination-powered indoor sandbox playground in the heart of the Upper East Side. With three uniquely themed sand zones, children ages 0–9 can dig, build, scoop, sculpt, explore, and dream up adventures of their own. From operating giant construction rigs to uncovering dinosaur fossils or creating the world’s wobbliest sandcastle, every handful of sand is an invitation to play, discover, and create. Our vision is simple: to bring back pure, imaginative play and create a welcoming space where kids can explore freely, friendships can grow, and families can make wonderful memories together.

What ages are welcome at Urban Dunes?
We welcome little explorers from 0–9 years old! We simply ask that older children be mindful of younger guests and treat our toys and play spaces with care.
What’s your footwear policy?
To keep our sand clean, comfortable, and safe for everyone, shoes are not permitted inside the sandboxes. If you’d like your child’s feet to be covered, socks are available for purchase at Urban Dunes.
Can parents or caregivers play in the sand with their children?
Absolutely! We love when parents and caregivers join the fun. Our play spaces are designed for grown-ups to get involved, play alongside their children, or simply enjoy watching their little explorers discover and create.
Are waivers required?
Yes. A signed waiver is required for every child who plays in our sandboxes. The waiver must be completed by the attending legal guardian or responsible adult. Every guest under 18 requires their own waiver.
Can we bring our own food or snacks?
Snacks are welcome, but please enjoy them outside the sandbox areas. For everyone’s safety, meals or foods requiring plates and utensils are not permitted, and we are a peanut-free space. Children should finish their snacks before returning to the sand. We also offer a selection of snacks and drinks for purchase.
How do you keep the sand clean?
Keeping our sand clean and our space welcoming is one of our top priorities! We rake and sanitize the sand daily using safe, chemical-free materials, regularly remove debris, and sanitize our toys. To help us maintain a clean play environment, outside toys, food, and drinks are not permitted in the sandboxes. We also ask that children who are feeling unwell wait until they’re better before visiting.
Do you clean the toys?
Yes! Our team regularly cleans and disinfects our toys to keep them fresh, clean, and ready for the next adventure.
Can we bring our own toys?
To help us keep the sand clean and the play experience consistent for everyone, outside toys are not permitted. But don’t worry, we have plenty to explore, including trucks, bulldozers, dinosaur fossils, scoops, buckets, and sandcastle molds!
What should my child wear?
Come ready to get sandy! We recommend comfortable, play-friendly clothing that your child can move around in freely. Fancy outfits are best saved for another adventure.
Can I drop my child off?
Children must be supervised by an adult at all times during open play. We do offer select drop-off programs for children ages 4 and up.
Do you have Wi-Fi and a seating area for adults?
Yes! We offer complimentary Wi-Fi and comfortable seating for parents and caregivers who want to relax, catch up on work, or simply enjoy a moment while their little ones play.
Are pets allowed?
We love our four-legged friends, but pets are not permitted inside Urban Dunes.
Can I bring a stroller?
Absolutely! Urban Dunes is located on the first floor of a brownstone with a few steps leading to the entrance. If you need a hand getting your stroller in or out, just let us know! Our team is always happy to help.
